When trying to install windows it freezes on the first file. The hard drive ide stops blinking and the cd is no longer churning or it's light no longer blinking. Have tried other OSs installations and it keeps freezing when trying to copy files to the hard disk. any ideas where i shud look for the problem?

What are the specs of your computer? Specifically Processor, Ram, and Hard disk. Also, is this a burn't cd or a retail version/oem? (Not accusing anyone of pirating, just trying to rule out that the disc was burnt at a speed faster than the cd-rom drive can handle.)

How about the make/model of your board?
Could be several things, but it's usually a sign of bad RAM. Download memtest86, create a bootable floppy, boot off it & let the program run...if any errors are reported, try different RAM
