computer freezes on connecting usb

ASUS/P5VD2-MX
November 6, 2008 at 11:07:55
Specs: WinXP Professional, Pentium4 /512
I have a weird problem with usb.
When I connect my MP3 or joystick everything
is fine, but when I connect a memory stick
or wireless lan the computer freezes and
I have to do a hard reboot.
If I leave the device connected then Windows
hangs at the startup screen.

Ok, this may seem a very simple solution BUT..... shut the PC down and remove the power cable...leave for 30 mins athen reboot and try again!

It does sound silly but this has been known to work a LOT with thins kinda problem!

Please let me know how you get on!

looks like I spoke too soon.
This problem is actually on a friend's machine.
I called him up last night with the solution and he told me it was OK, but this morning he found that when he plugged his WLan to the USB it wrongly detects it as an old WLan which he does not have anymore.
I booted into safemode and tried to uninstall all the old wifi usb devices but it won't uninstall them.
Any suggestions ???
