I downloaded 2 programs to burn a YouTube DVD from Tinkernut.com My computer has gone crazy since that time freezing up, and I have to do control, alt, dlte, all the time to end programs or just push the off button to turn off the computer. I want to back up programs I want to save WD MyBook & restore the computer back to factory settings. Can you tell me how to do this? And will I be able to restore the things I want to keep, easily back onto my computer? Thanks

This is not as easy as it sounds like you would like. Programs cannot really be backed up after installation. You need the install cd's, DVD's or Executables. You will also need an installation image of some kind. If you are not familiar with any of this there are computer repair companies all over the place. Call one of them and they will probably charge you $50-80 to fix it. If you cant afford it then you will need to backup all of the data that you dont want to lose on an external hard drive and then google "how to reinstall windows". Good Luck.

I realize that I need the CD's to put the programs back on. I have an extra hard drive - a WD MyBook that I want to back
everything up on before I do the system restore. I also know that I can have someone else work on it but every time I do this, they end up messing up my programs and removing things I don't want removed and adding things I don't want on my computer - which is why I want to do it myself. Everything was fine until I installed DVDFlick and Ipod Video Converter. That is when things started going south. If the last idiot that worked on my computer had not turned off my System Restore, I could have just restored back to an earlier date.

Yes, I immediately uninstalled them and any others that I thought may be causing the problems. That was over two weeks ago. I have now concluded the only thing that will fix it is a complete restoration, unless I go the route of taking it to be repaired, which I really don't want to do.

Do you have a windows xp disk? If you do, you can do a repair and not loose any programs or data.

I have the back up restore disks that came with computer when I purchased it in Oct 2006. I once had to do a system restore right after I got it because somehow it got locked saying I needed a password to get in although I had never set up a password. Are those the ones you mean?

I don't like the program but you can use Symantec Ghost to do what you are looking for. This wont work for your existing problem but in the future you can just run a restore. For now you can save your pertinent data to an external drive and reinstall with the cd's. From then on you can do a ghost of the drive so you have a more up to date ghost image in the event that the thing crashes again.
