Specs: Windows XP
I have an old Gateway pentium II and someone infected it with a virus and my last result was to rewrite it yet again and the problem I am having is that when the computer boots up on the dos screen I get ATAPI device error for toshiba DVD Rom X16 non responsive. I press F1 to go to menu and then press ESC and save changes and then it starts. the CD tray will not open when I press the button, and I know there is nothing stuck in the drive. I tried to open it by inserting a paper clip into the designated hole next to the button to try and force it to open but it does nothing. please help!

Look at the device manager. It sounds like the driver is missing.

actually I took it apart and there was a game stuck in it lol

(I gave this computer to my brother in law who is really dumb when it comes to technology)

so a gear popped out so that the tray just flops open and so I disabled it in the device manager and told him to buy a new one, (gave him the part number and all that jazz) everything works fine now except the desktop recovery does not work I get an error message and it says to continue running script on this page click yes or no and this does absolutely nothing! I'm lost... I scanned for viruses and removed them my next step is removing spyware with spybot... anything that may be helpful with this?

If it's giving you that error during the POST screen, then it has nothing to do with Windows drivers.

I think your drive has died, try replacing it.
