I built a P3 computer everything was working fine . Then I went to swap ram from one computer to the other both contained PC100 ram. Now the monitor does not responsed to the cpu. I switch the memory around. certain slots I get continuous beeps from the cpu and on the others just seems like it boots up find but no display on screen. I am using on board video. I have tried everything. Opened up the box to make sure everything is secure. I don't know what else to do. Help!!!

If the memory in one machine was error correction memory and the other was not, you could have problems. Check in the BIOS for 2 things. EEC memory enable and amount of memory allocated to video. If you have ecc memory in either machine it should be enabled in the BIOS and that will tell you that it is ECC. You need to allocate some system memory to run the onboard graphics. Why are you switching memory anyway. If it was to gain more memory in the other machine then that could be the problem also. The chipset may not be able to utilize the new memory do to limitations on density. Check with the manufacturers for specs on the MBs & chipsets.

I have a capacity of 512 mb on this motherboard. I was taking memory out of the other machine to bring this one to 320mb. I tired putting the old memory back in but to no prevail. I am using SDRAM, PC100 • CL=2 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 8ns • 3.3V • 16Meg x 64. Is it possible that I fried the motherboard.

You didn't do a hot swap did you? Switching memory shouldn't fry your MB. Try clearing the CMOS.

I tried clearing the CMOS but I still didn't get anywhere. I have tried switch ram nothing either. I also tried switching the FSB to default auto detect. I have tried 3 different montiors. Don't know what else to do. Thanks everyone for your help. If you can think of anything else please let me know. I am about to purchase a new MB.

Othehill - what did you mean by hot swap?

I thought that maybe you removed the ram while the machine was turned on. The reason I thought that was because switching memory shouldn't cause the problems you have. Maybe you had a static discharge and damaged something. If I understand your problem, you can't get either machine to run now? You didn't dislodge any cards or cables when you were in there. Try re-seating everything. Do you have a speaker in the case itself? Did you used to get a single beep when booting. I ask because that speaker can be helpful. The BIOS sends audible signals to indicate a failure. Do you get anything at all when you try to start up? Any lights, fans or sounds?

You have no idea what I have gone through today I am so fraustrated. I emailed the motherboard manufacture. They told me to take all the memory out if I get continuous long beeps the mother board is fine. The other system is operating fine. I tried getting a new power supply today. That didn't work either. When the memory is in I don't get any beeps. The fans do turn on and the green light on the motherboard but no display.

When you cleared the CMOS, did you use the jumper? Did you have the computer unplugged when doing it? Did you reseat all card and cables?

Yes, I used the jumpers to clear CMOS. My next step is to purchase new ram. If that doesn't work. I am just going to purchase a new Motherboard and processor. It's cheap then taking the computer into a repair shop. Thank you for everything.

Well I went to return the new power supply I bought and got a new memory chip. PC100 128mb non Ecc to match the other one I had. I loaded the new one first and then booted up. Still got nothing. So then I added the other 128 chip I had to see if maybe the mother board required two chips. Nothing either. According to the manufacture after taking all the memory out and you get the beeps the motherboard is good. Then I tried a new power supply nothing. Then I tried new memory nothing. What is left? I check to make sure the Motherboard wasn't touching anything that could be shorting it out. What do you think. Could the VGA output have gone bad?
