Hi I'm trying to build a computer out of some spare parts for my brother, When I start the computer up it goes through post and then starts to load windows but before it shows the windows XP graphic it resets (it does this forever untill you turn it off_). The MOBO has an integrated graphics card on it so I believe this could be the problem somehow, I thought originally that maybe there wasn't enough ram to power both the graphics and the computer so I tried more ram in it, but still the same problem, maybe there is an option in bios with something to do with it?

Ok so I'll outline what I have tried so I don't get these reponces:

Different hard drives
Diffent power supplys
no cards in, no cd rom in
reinstall windows(still crashes before it gets to the install part)
other graphics card
different (more) ram
GFX card in AGP slot

Thanx in advance

Try a 'Repair' install. If you have made changes to the system, it can mess up XP and require a repair. You can find some help here.

Put a live linux cd or even OS's on floppies.

If it works then you may need to start xp in safe mode and try that.

If that works see the event viewer for service fails or other issues. Might have to setup a dump log. Suspect also virus's. Clean install with updates from package is normally a solution.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

I can't reinstall windows in any mode, it just restarts after loading all the drivers so I don't even get as far as trying to install anything. Safe mode doesn't work either and its not a virus as the hard drive works on other computers.

Check your RAM.

There is a version to create a bootable floppy diskette and/or an ISO for creating a CD.

Check your temperatures.

Have you considered bad mobo?

Look in your board for busted/fat/leaking capacitors or burnned transistors.

I'm just a shadow of my former self!

Get a live linux cd or floppy or dos floppy even if it is a boot floppy.

Guess you could try the xp or vista disk too.

I've had the very same problem. Check that userinit.exe in Windows/Sytem32 is not corrupt. Mine was missing altogether (possibly thru a virus attack?).

Using a boot cd program to examine Windows, (sorry, I don't know which one it was) the technician copied userinit.exe over from another computer and all was good.

Could be worth checking.
