Computer constantly beeping

I am asking for help for my mom's computer. She called me tonight and I could hear the computer beeping over the phone. It just started beeping tonight. She was using MS Word and it started. It's a series of 5 beeps, not long, with about a second between each. They are quieter than the beep at post. She noticed that when it started beeping she couldn't type but in between the series of beeps she could. The computer still starts and you still get the normal beep on post. It's just after it's been running for a bit it will start this quieter beeping. HELP Please! I really don't want to go running up there and spend half the night trying to fix it with my mom hanging over my shoulder and asking a zillion questions. I'm desperate here! BTW ... my mom is 77 years old.

That sounds like an overheating alarm. You may need to clean out the the dust and dirt. A critical fan may also have failed.

Get canned compressed air at an office supply or computer store and use to blow out the case including the power supply. DO NOT use a vacuum cleaner as it can cause static and kill the computer.

I agree; sure sounds like an overheating alarm.

Probably OK in the morning for the first 15-20 minutes.

Great! Thanks! I called my mom and told her I'd be over in the morning to check it out. She has it turned off and it's not beeping. I'll post back tomorrow after I've had a look to let you know. Thanks for the help!

i agree with the above.
If you know how to enter the bios setup program, you can maybe check the temperatures there, and also the limits which set off the beeps.

Also, check the input holes on the power supply. They can get clogged up and prevent the fan from sucking any air through.

OK, I've just come from my mom's. I can't find any reason why her computer was beeping. I blew out the dust in the fans and both appear to be working fine. I've checked the bios and temps are within safe range. It didn't beep at all while I was there and she said that after awhile it quit beeping. I guess we're now at the wait and see stage. Any other ideas? Thanks everyone!

aegis mentioned that you may need to change the temperature setting for the alarm. If it is set too low it may go off again.

It could also be a voltage problem. There are usually checks for the voltages being out of tolerance.
