Assuming you mean a desktop model

"Is computer dead till replaced?"

Gosh, no

The CMOS battery retains the various hardware settings and keeps time when the computer is turned off

If it dies, the computer may autodetect the hardware upon each startup, but will have lost the correct time and any BIOS adjustments you may have previously made

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

It used to be a bigger deal in olden times, before computers were smart enough to determine their own hardware (around the 386 era) - back then you were well advised to write down your hard drive specs and such for fear of the computer losing that info and being unable to read the primary drive - plus the specs were rarely listed on the drive itself (internet access was uncommon as well)

Scary times ; )
