Can I have a wireless router and a wifi card on the same desktop computer?
I am new at this and would like to know if there would be a conflict between them.
I would like to set up a wirless system in my home but also have access to wifi from nearby business that have wifi available.

So you want to swipe the internet service for your whole house from a nearby business? I would worry about security.

No, these business supply the wifi free to anyone. Mcdonalds and many restruants do this here in my town. Don't you ever get out of the house?

See now if that guy was smart he should have bought something once from their and kept the wraper and cup. then It would have looked like he went there and bought something.
Now here is where this law doesn't apply. From my understanding if the wi-fi goes beyond the stores boundries then it's just apart of public properity so therefor no law is broken.

Neither is buying a cup of coffee from there and sitting there for 4 hours using their Wi-Fi.
I agree It isn't ehtical doing it in their parking lot wasting space, but if the dude was beyond their boundries, then I see nothing wrong with that, because that's apart of the public properity now. I mean, if these places want to protect their Wi-Fi from non-paying customers, then there is pretty simple solution to that problem; just put in a time key code. That way it blocks non paying customers and for those customers that buy something, they will be allowed to go online using a code that has a timer on it and the timer will be set for an x amount of time based on what you bought. Once the timer goes off, then you can renew it for x amount via buying something else or paying for extra time.

But, to answer the question...
They will not conflict as you will select which available wireless network that you will connect to.
If one was a wired LAN with a wireless and you were using VPN software then you could have issues with the VPN connection breaking due to a conflict where you would need to disable the wirelss connection but otherwise; no.

im not going to preach so you can have a router conected to a desktop pc with cable and conect to it from the same computer using wireless. there wont be a conflict. if you conect a pc wired to a router and wifi to another network that too wont conflict.
the pc will just figuire out where to get the data from. so if your conect to a router via wire and wifi make sure when your veiwing sensitive material or credit card numbers to disable wi fi and make it use the wired conection.right here is what i think your trying to do. conect to a food chain and then spread that access across your network to other pcs using that desktop.
ok here is where you lose me why use and outside source for the internet as well as use a router? is this a proper router or a adsl/cable switch afair? if its a proper router you turn your desk top into a bridge and pass the conection to the router. if its a adsl/cable switch afair you will not be able to use the internet from the company to any other pc on the network besides the one with the wirless card.
besides that cough up for the connection. free rarly means free.
