Remove any bootable CDs or DVDs from drives.

Repeatedly press F8 while booting, don't hold down the key, and when the (Windows) loading choices menu appears, choose

Disable automatic restart.......

Windows will attempt to load normally, and you probably see a blue screen with a
STOP: 0Xx00000xx
code on it and the screen and Windows will freeze there.

Quote that STOP code - we don't need the stuff in brackets to the right of that.

If the text mentions a problem file, quote the name of the file.

(Hold the power button in or down for at least 4 seconds until the mboard shuts off.)

Some computers have another use for pressing the F8 key while booting,
E.g. You may see a screen where you can select a device to boot the computer from.

If you see that, READ the text on the screen to find the key that exits that screen, e.g. Esc.
Press that key, then immediately repeatedly press the F8 key, then you will see the (Windows) loading choices menu, choose

Disable automatic restart.......

Disable automatic restart........... is a one time thing.

You need to select that each time you boot the computer. .

There is a setting in Windows that also disables Automatic restart on system failure (Automatically restart) that can be disabled to do that all the time, but you must have a working Windows installation to set that.

If you see some other message on a blue screen and DO NOT see the (Windows) loading choices menu, you must boot the computer from an XP CD to possibly fix the problem. .
Try going into the Recovery Console and running CHKDSK /R C:
