Compaq Presario x1000 CTO

Specs: Windows XP, 256 mb
I bought this computer from an auction Compaq Presario x1000 CTO with 1 gig ram & 20 gig hard drive. I tried to install Windows XP and while copying files it locks and says my bios needs updating. I tried Windows 2000, same thing. I went to Compaqs website and saw the bios download which told me to download it to my hard drive & run the program. I am on my main computer because the one in question just has dos on it. So I download the update, copy it to my compaq & when I run it it says it cannot be run in a Windows environment? It can't be run in a Windows environment because it won't let me install Windows until I update the bios. What can I do. I have updated a bios before where after running the program it created diskettes that I booted from but none where it had to update the bios in a Windows environment.

If the computer came with xp, you should have no problem installing it. I think that the installer is not communicating with the BIOS correctly. I would recommend replacing the BIOS battery and resting the BIOS.
