Compaq Presario Laptop does nothing

My dad's friend wanted me to have a look at his Compaq Presario 1200 laptop, i have no idea of the spec or anything, but when switching on, the POST screen comes up with "Press F10 to enter setup" but then nothing happens. It just sits there! Pressing F10 changes it to "Entering Setup..." but still nothing. What could be wrong? I don't know all that much about laptops, is this a common problem with this make/model? My 'guess' is a hard drive problem. The Compaqs usually have part of the bios on the hard drive. Check the Compaq/HP site for a diagnostic.
