Currently I am trying to upgrade a Compaq Presario 2200 for a relative. Win95 was originally on it and after backing up the important data I fdisked the drive to start a Win98 install booting from the cd. Problem is when I boot from the Win98 cd I ended up with a bunch of garbage on the screen with a lot of beeping. Amoungest the junk on screen I could make out parts of the Win98 cd start-up menu. Not being that familiar with Compaq's something in the back of my mind vaguely reminds me about some special setup with Compaq machines and their hard drives (setup stored on the drive or something). Assuming this I probably wiped out what was there when I Fdisk'd the drive. When re-doing the pc with it's original Win95 system restore cd everything is cool.
How can I do a "from scratch" install of Win98 without using that stupid restore cd? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Mark

From my experence with two Compaqs its best to use the restore CD.I tried installing a clean install of 98SE.It was slow so i ordered a restore CD poped it in let it do its job and its now a little faster.Im lucky my Compaqs don't have BIOS in harddrive.Sounds like that might be the case in your situation.I would suggest e-mailing compaq.I have had no problem getting support from them. When i send them a e-mail they usually reply within an hour. You let me know the serial number i will e-mail them for you.Or you can try and yourself. Here is there e-mail.

Compaq Diagnostics for Windows 95/98 are available here:

I always wipe out the hidden partitions and Setup files and use a utility like the following to cleanse the drive.

I e-mailed compaq for you here is there reply.
I see that you would like detailed steps to install Windows 98 operating
system. The operating system (OS) shipped with your machine is the OEM version
and is best suited for the machine. Installing the other operating
system like Windows 98 would result in driver incompatibility and
certain devices and applications may not functioning properly. However, if you wish to install Windows 98, you can visit the URL given

A detailed description on how to install Windows 98 is given in the
above-mentioned Web site.Thank you for taking the time to contact us. Please reply if I can be
of further assistance.Regards,
