Compaq Notebook shuts down

Comment:
I have a Compaq Presario 2700T Notebook P3 1.13 gHz with 512 meg RAM running Win XP Pro Ver 2002 sp2.
The computer shuts down shortly after being booted up, usually after reaching the login screen. I want to reinstall Windows, but I never get the POST screen, and I am unable to enter the BIOS setup by pressing a function key.

Try F8. See if you can get to the screen that gives you the boot choices. If you can, boot to safe mode w/ networking.

F8 and F10 occasionally give me the boot choices, but safe mode also shuts down.
Any ideas about why I can't get into the BIOS setup?
Thanks John

I used to see the power on self test info when this computer was turned on. It stopped giving me this info at the same time it started suddenly powering off. I thought that the POST routine took place before the HDD is accessed. Wrong?
Of course, that's where I used to be able to press F8 or F10 (I can't remember which) to go into the BIOS setup.
Thanks John
