Compaq laptop Backlight shuts off, goes out

October 4, 2010 at 00:56:21
Specs: Windows XP Pro

My comp is Compaq Evo N1000. The backlight seemingly shuts off when I start Windows. Computer remains active, can see if hold LCD lamp at 10 to 20 degree angle at screen, seems to continue running fine, just no backlight.

Have read many articles, with just as many suggestions, none of which have worked. Have noticed it being called, "Black Screen"

Is there a driver(s) for the backlight ?

Have switched Inverter 4x, have 5 Inverters now. Is there an app for controling the backlight. Any other ideas?

Possible Software problems ?

Possible Hardware problrems ?

(R)

No doubt you have probably tried this,

But have you tried using the Fn key shotcut for backlight brightness?

Has it worked in the past or is this a new installation of your os?

Hi, kieron2k4, on 4 Oct 10
Yes, have tried the Fn key, my comp only dims to a certain point, and no further, have tried up/down, no response. Had comp for many years, cannot remember, has worked fine all those years. I had installed a new, larger hard drive a few years back and using Windows FAST Wizard program, copied all Files and Settings, as per instructions. Needless to say Win FAST Wiz did not work properly and not all files, settings, drivers, etc.... were copied and transferred, it has been tedious, but the backlight has been working fine all along. Then it would black-out, sometimes it took a little longer than other times, but when I would re-boot the backlight always came back on, for a while. Then it wouldn't come on once Windows loaded.

I've tried powering down completely, removeing power supply, removeing battery, push and holding power up button and hold for 3 minutes or so. Re-assembling comp, booting up, only find no change. At last boot-up, backlight stayed on as long as stayed in Safe-mode, now, finally
