Comment:
We have a Compaq Evo D51U (Ultra-Slim Form Factor) that is running terribly sluggish.

We thought at first we had a failing HD so we replaced it and reloaded Windows.

The longer the PC runs the slower it responds. These are very small compact machines with only a heat sink on th CPU.

Is anyone familiar with this particular PC that might can help? It is out of warranty so HP is no help to me.

Thanks -

Chad

One of the drawbacks to SFF PCs is poor cooling characteristics. Your P4 is probably throttling to protect itself from overheating/frying. It would have to get pretty hot though...in excess of 70C. What is the CPU temp?

BTW, it doesn't help that you only have 256MB RAM.

Not sure on the temps - any suggestions on an easy way to monitor?

Yes, 256 is weak - working on that as the budget allows.

Thanks

Did you check the BIOS?

Starting to steer away from heat as a culprit - ugh - machine is driving me nuts as now we are even having issues loading Windows on it.

I am starting to think we have a definite hardware issue.

You can't rule out overheating unless you know the CPU temp...look in the BIOS!

Unless I am blind (or stupid) I could find nothing temp related in the BIOS.
