Hi,
I have a compaq deskpro 4000 with a Pentium 166Mhz CPU and 32 MB RAM, I'm trying to upgrade the CPU to an AMD K6II 500MHz. Just wanna know is it compatible and are there any caveats in doing that.Do I have to have special jumper settings etc?
Also is there any good website with step by step guide to doing a CPU upgrade?
Thanks

Upgrading a CPU is really straight forward but I doubt very much that an AMD chip will fit into your computer!

NO Compaq have limited configuration settings, you need a 100fsb, 5x multiplier and the voltage is lower than the P166.

It will fit but probably toast it, if does run 233mhz is about max speed it will be recognised at.

Alternative is to go to www.powerleap.com

Thanks for the reply. Isn'tthat tru that AMDk62 is also a Socket 7 CPU? Then why its gonna be toasted,is that the jumper settings.

Alternatively if I replace the whole mother board and get a AMDk62 motherboard then will that be OK?

Thanks again.

The K6/2 is a socket 7 processor, however, it is meant to go in a "Super" socket 7 motherboard. And, yes, I agree that you might fry it due to voltage requirements. I had the same issue with my IBM PC330 that had a Pentium (133, and then a 166) in it, and I wanted to insert a K6/2 350, but the multiplier/FSB as well as the voltage issues were there.

Yes, you could get a Super Socket 7 motherboard and then put the K6/2 in it. You may have issues of AT versus ATX m-board/case, though. Plus, I'm not that familiar with the Deskpro 4000, but it may be too proprietary to simply drop in a clone motherboard, and I doubt Compaq has an upgrade motherboard for that system.

Good luck.

It is a proprietary motherboard.

I finally found out that my CPU is 233MHz (was thinking it's 166 before) and now I decided instead of upgrading CPU I'm upgrading memory and Hard disk ( bought both from ebay for $10 and $40). The reason I wanted to upgrade was so that I can run Microsoft viual C# on that PC.
Does any body know if I can run visual C# on a 233 MHz?
Thanks for the responses.
