Are you certain you have given the correct model number for your old ECS board? I cannot locate it in ECS archives.
Apart from that, the compaq board you've bought is a proprietary part designed to work in a compaq box. It has no inbuilt PCI slots, these being on a riser card that plugs into the board. Do you have the riser card? It could also be the case that a compaq specific heatsink/fan unit will be required, and sometimes with compaq, their own style connector from powersupply. You may have researched these issues so forgive me if that is the situation. It is just that I would be very surprised if you can manage to get a compaq board to work in a generic system.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Richard is correct, Compaq and HP Dell and Gateway motherboards are not meant to work in anything but their own cases. There may be some these days that will, but I wouldn't ever try it if it meant buying and then trying.
