Compaq BIOS will not recognize SATA HDD

November 20, 2011 at 10:35:38
Specs: Windows XP
Fooling around with it, I've manage to get windows Xp on it yet before it was windows vista. Yuck. It's a sata hard drive, red wiring. What happens is everytime I start it up, I get the Disk error, please insert system disk and press enter. And then sometimes, rarely, when I'm fooling around with the BIOS and happen to restart it, it'll load everything up! I do not understand what is going wrong. The BIOS isn't recognizing the HDD. Another thing I have tried is plugging my old IDE Hard drive and the BIOS reads that but when its loading windows it'll flash a blue screen and that's all. Plugging in the Cd-ROM somehow disables the hard drive so for some reason I can only use one of those, which doesn't help me any.

I've provided some limited info, what all I could get. Maybe it'll help.

Phoenix-AwardBIOS CMOS setup Utility.
CPU Type: AMD Athlon (tm) Dual Core Processor 4850e
Core Ver. = V6.0
BIOS Revision = 5.31 8/21/2008
Model # = SR5707C
Product # = NC820AD-ABA
Build ID = 91NAv3PrA1
Memory = 2048MB

Don't know if that'll be much help but thank you in advance for any help.

As it's XP you'll have to have installed SATA drivers. Nothing to do with the BIOS, this is so that the OS can see the drive. Have you done this?

Well I mean there must be installed SATA drivers if it has been able to boot up once before, right?

Vista supported sata drives, but you say you wiped it out and are attempting to install XP. XP did not support sata drives, so you need to install sata drivers. Look at the link posted above for directions.

You know, that might actually be the solution. I never thought of that. One question, which one do I download for XP?

The first download link?
