Go into safe mode. Go to Device Manager to see if any devices are not working properly.

The BSOD may be caused by windows loading the wrong graphics drivers for your laptop. Remove the drivers by rolling back to Standard VGA. Then try rebooting to standard Windows. If you can get into Windows go to the HP site and find all the drivers for your computer.

I said ALL. Download and install ALL Win98 drivers for that laptop and install ALL.

Also, save them to CDR so you will have them next time.

You're welcome. The drivers from the manufacturer are usually preferable to generic Windows drivers.

you need to be carefull which type of pcmcia card you get. A card that fits only type 2 slots probably will not work, you need the older type.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...

I used this card in a compaq LTE, with a pentium 75 & 40mb of ram.
card was new in the box & came with 98 drivers on a floopy. DSL linux picked it up out of the box.

you would need a 32 bit cardbus type slot.
If you have the older 16 bit slot, they won't work. You need to research you laptop to find out. I don't even know if 16 bit wireless cards exist. Maybe someone else may know.

a quick google search, shows you have a pentium 133. so that 2nd card you listed is definitly out.
I doubt if a p133 has 32 bit slots, but I could be wrong.

some older 16 bit cards, also support 32 bit, like the card I listed. that doesn't mean your slot is 32 bit.

I agree with larry. Your P133 is most likely not 32 bit compatible. I don't know alot about PC cards but I think the slot configuration is even different.

I just looked at the link I provided above and there is a listing for a network driver. That would indicate you have a built in network adapter and you should be able to connect to a network that way using a cable.

Look for a port that looks like a phone jack but a little wider. You Might have both a network and modem port on there.

the card doesn't have to be netgear. the one on ebay I linked to will work. view sellers other items shows he has one left.
They are brand new in the box, keep in mind the drivers are on a floopy.
the seller has paypal, but if you "contact the seller, and ask if you can mail a money order, he may agree, he did for me.

Install all the drivers. If you use Windows Media Player you may want to update that. You will need to update your IE to ver6 in order to access most sites fully so do that. There may be some critical updates still available on the update site. Get the computer running smoothly and then think about installing programs.

are you installing more than one at a time? If so, try just one at a time. You may have a defective integrated hardware component or something. Do one, reboot, do another. If you identify one that causes the BSOD, write down the exact message on the screen.

You may need an updated version of Windows installer. Look in Control Panel> add/remove programs to see if windows installer is listed. If so, what version is it?

Are you installing Win98 original or SE?

1024 seems to be too high a resolution for a 12.1" screen. However, if you are offered that resolution it must be available. When trying to reset the resolution also look at the color depth. You only have 32MB of RAM and only part of it is shared video RAM. If you want to run at 1024 you may need to set the depth to 256 colors. Even then it may not work. Try 800x600. Your model has a maximim RAM capacity of 80MB. If you had more RAM the amount you might be able to change the amount of shared RAM. Look for that setting in the BIOS screens.

The link below indicates your PC slot is 32 bit. I can’t state for sure that is accurate but it does appear to be.

http://developer.novell.com/yes/343...

That would mean you have more options available for getting online.

Don't fix what ain't broken. Stay out of the case.

So did you finally manage to get the drivers installed or not? Some of the drivers may be OK using the Win98 default ones. This is due to the fact that your laptop MAY pre-date the release of Win98. If you can get the drivers from the HP site to work all the better.
