Compaq adaptor damaged

a thrid party 15-20V 6Amp adaptor was used for a compaq laptop 18.5V 2.7Amp for a month. now the laptop smells burning and not working. it is a Compaq Evo Laptop. any chance to repair?? do I need to change the whole board or it might be only a kit. Many thanks.

I suggest this may one of those times to bite the bullet and go to the professionals. Try an authorized Compaq repair shop.
Alternatively, Compaq may have a forum that may be able to give you some insite as to what damage may have been done.
My feeling is that you probably shouldn't waste any cash on it. You don't give any specs so we can only guess the speed and age of the unit. The repair will most likely exceed the value of the unit.

Yeah, there's no way to know what got smoked. However, according to the adapter specs it shouldn't have caused the problem.
