Comment: I have a compaq presario 5000 with winxp on it. Everything had been working fine, until I came home and noticed the monitor with black screen. tried to restart, had to physically unplug to do this. Now it boots to a black screen, and at time it will actually boot up. It will work for a while and then freeze up and on restart, black screen again. I have noticed each time after freeze up and boot up, all drives start up except the disk drive, no power or activity from it, unlike when it boots up normally. please help, I have even replaced the motherboard since I thought that was it, and it worked for a couple of days and then started doing it again. I need advice on this one. thanks

Reply: (edit)I have the same exact problem. The computer doesn't really boot up, the BIOS never completes the transfer. I noticed one more thing...I use a surge protector into which I have everything plugged. During normal operations, after turning on the main switch I still have to start my computer...that's good BUT...if I turn on the main switch...and the computer powers up...that's when it doesn't boot up. I did remove the CPU from the surge protector...didn't matter.
