I just got a wireless compact flash card to be used with my pda and it came with a compact flash to pc card adapter. The product is the SMC SMC2545W and the adapter included is the SMCCF-CVT.
My question is can the adapter be used as an adapter for a compact flash memory card in a laptop? I want to use the adapter that was included to view the contents of a cf card on a laptop. I've emailed SMC and did not receive a clear answer. I'm thinking that the laptop would just view the cf card with adapter as an extra drive but not sure. Are there any extra drivers that are needed for something like this? The converter that is included is only sold with the compact flash kit so the only drivers available from SMC would be for the wireless adapter. Also, I would be using Win2k which can already detect usb flash drives without need for drivers. I currently do not have a cf card to test but do not want to risk damaging it or the adapter even if I had one. Anyone else have any experience with this product? Thanks.

I think CF/PCMCIA adapters are similar/identical. I have two different adapters. I only use it with memory cards, various brands, for digital camera and as storage in CE-pdas. I transfer data to laptop(s) with adapter and desktop with USB and parallel port adapters. All read, write, copy with no problem.
I would try it. Or buy another adapter, $15 or so.

Compact Flash are ATA66 complient and providing your Laptop BIOS supports 32bit PCMCIA, then should show as removable storage device (hard drive). You could buy a cheap USB read/writer for around € 10
