Specs: Windows XP
i have come into possesion of a old dell
optiplex gx270, who when i got it, it would only
boot to the bios. i took out basically
everything, then put them back in. now it says
that it can not find any hardware installed on
the computer, including cd drive and hard
drive. i have checked all the connections
several times. also, when i open up the tower,
there is a faint burning like smell, but nothing
obviously burned. any help would be
appreciated, even if i know i can just salvage
the mobo

Either the data cables (assuming IDE) are backwards, a jumper on a drive is wrong, or possibly a bad controller chip. You may be able to use an external card, but you'd have to disable the internal chip through the BIOS. If you smell something faintly "burnt", however, the damage may be worse than that; and you need to take care of that issue (if possible) first. It very well could wind up being a waste of time---and even to salvage the MoBo, you'd have to find another Dell...
