I got a computer just to tinker with from a friend who couldn't get it to start, and she isn't extremely computer literate. I used the jumper on the mainboard to clear the CMOS settings, and finally got it to the boot up stage. Keyboard is detected, mouse is detected. I get the error saying CMOS settings are wrong (of course), and when I press F9, it doesn't do a thing. I have tried another keyboard already (the one I'm using right now), and was without luck.. Is there anything that I can do to fix this, or is there anything that would prevent me from getting into the CMOS like that? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This was posted in the ME forum by pure sleepiness, but I left it in there to hope someone that reads the ME forums may have some type of information, not doing it to annoy anyone or anything of the like.

The only thing I can think of is A: you are pressing the wrong key to enter setup, or B: the computer may be set up for USB keyboard only. This can usually be changed by a jumper on the mobo or in BIOS. If it is in BIOS then obviously you will have to get a USB keyboard, But do this first. During POST or actually memory check it will usually tell you at the bottom of the screen briefly what key to press to enter set up. Once it finishes booting, restart the computer and start toggling that key until you get the setup screen. Good Luck.

I know I"m pressing the right key, and it is set for a USB keyboard, because it's using a USB keyboard. I have already tried getting into the BIOS and it will not allow me to do that either. What is the jumper labeled? I only see two on the mobo, one being to clear the CMOS and the other is something I can't remember right now.

Thanks for the reply.

I finally got it to get into the BIOS, but not by pressing F1.. I booted it up with the jumper on the wrong slot, and usually most computer's won't even boot up like that, but it booted straight into the BIOS for some reason, but it doesn't do much good if I can't use the keyboard.. :/

Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time!
