Comment:

I just finished installing a used hard drive in a 486 for my daughter. The cmos autodetects it on drive d: but it is suppose to be on c:, it has no cd-rom drive, just two floppy drives & a hard drive. When I type d: & enter it says invalid drive specification, c: says the same thing. I type fdisk /status & it detects the hard drive on d: but I cant access it. Can this be a jumper matter on the drive for I have no documentation for it because it was bought used from the thrift store. On the drive it says "Western Digital Caviar 2200 AT Compatible Intelligent Drive" Then goes on to list the HD Geometry. Then again the drive could be bad because it was purchased from the thrift. Any ideas?

a) It could be a jumper thing, checkout the makers website for hdd info.

Set it up for master only or master with slave

b) one of the jumper settings is for cable select (which I avoid using).

This uses the plug on the interface cable to determine whether it is master (normally end socket on cable) or slave (normally middle socket on cable) drive.

Have you been able to use fdisk to checkout its partitions?

Before bringing it into use I would have a look at what is on the disk worth saving and copy this away. Then reformat using /s /u /c options.

Good luck keep us posted.
