Isn't the CMOS battery the backup battery?
i have a laptop and im trying to follow directions, but i'm confused!

"Remove the backup battery, the new ram, also unplug the AC adapter and make sure the initial memory is securely attached and put the CMOS battery back in.
Press the powerbutton and hold it in for about 3-4 minutes (you may need time this), make sure the backup battery and AC adapter are NOT! plugged in when you press the button."

That's a little confusing. What is your laptop? I'd like to read the manual or whatever you're getting the instructions from. Did you add memory and have a problem?

agree with skip on confussing, but would say that the backup battery is the main battery pack and there for different then the cmos battery- just a guess.

The CMOS battery is not the `backup' battery. I think someone was refering to the large battery that the laptop runs on as the backup battery. The CMOS battery is a tiny one mounted on the motherboard.

Not true.

First, do not start a new thread, I assume the next newer thread above this is you, too?

POST THE MODEL of your computer.

Some laptops (my old Thinkpads, for one) have a cmos battery AND a small backup battery that maintains (I don't understand it all) some sort of settings when in standby/sleep, or maybe it's to hot swap the main battery. Been so long, I don't remember, and I don't use those features, anyhow.

Back to it

Post the model of your computer.

Post a more meaningful question. Exactly what (wrong) is the computer doing that you are trying to fix, and what exactly have you done to try?

Post the model of your computer. If this is, say, a IBM Thinkpad, then tell us all

"I have an IBM Thinkpad 600X, type no. XXXX", or whatever.

And, in case I forgot, POST THE MODEL of your computer.

Debb,

Got your PM and I apologize for the confusion, I was talking about the laptop's main battery pack (NOT! CMOS) when I mentioned the backup battery.

Hope I have been able to clear the mixup.

Ok, why don't we stick to this very thread.

do you have the user manual or "hardware maintenance manual? You can download both from ibm.com support.

The FIRST thing I do in any of these types of situations, is simplify the problem.

Remove the new memory you just put in.

Pull out any pcmcia cards that may be in the slots.

Remove the hard drive, and emty the CDROM/floppy bay. If you have the external cable connected floppy drive, disconnect it, too. Pull out the main battery.

Plug in your power supply, and if it's good, the machine should boot to some sort of error screen, mine boots to the outline monochrome graphic asking for a floppy or other disc. There may be some reset button on the machine, I've never needed to do so yet. Post back your results, and I'll dig further.

IBM support, by the way, has excellent support.

Memory diagnostics starts on page 33 of this document:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/09n1033.pdf

name' advice should be followed. This machine only accepts a total of 288Mb. Where did you find the procedure in your original post?

In laptops that have sleep/suspend the CMOS battery is not the same as the backup battery. In the models that I have worked on (Early Toshiba) there were 3 rechargeable batteries; 1-Main battery pack 9.6v, 2-CMOS battery 3.6v, & 3-backup battery 1.2v. The problem in the Toshiba was the location (between the screen hinges, in the bottom part of the screen).
