I am trying to replace a motherboard CMOS battery for someone's Gateway 2000 computer. The battery is held in with a metal clip. The clip doesn't seem to lift at all. Stupid question: How do you get the battery out without breaking the clip?

It won't rotate either. There must be a way to get the battery out because its not soldered on. This page has a picture of a battery held in with a clip:
They make it sound simple to remove the battery but they don't mention anything about the clip.

Tom, the battery should be able to be slid out from under the clip. try, being very careful, ory up on the side of the battery opposite the clip and see if it won't pop out. then slide the new one in under the clip till it pops back into the slot.
