At times varying from a few seconds to a few minutes after I start up my laptop (a Toshiba Satellite 3005-S304), the lcd screen will go dim, as if the backlight suddenly switches off.
If I restart in the same power mode that the machine was in when it happened, it will start up with the same dim screen, but if it happens in AC mode, and I restart in Battery mode, then the screen will be back on when I restart, and vice-versa. Even then, the problem may repeat itself many times before the screen stays on permanently. Once it's on, though, it will stay lit until I shut the machine down, where I may get to start the whole process over the next time I start up again.
This doesn't happen every time. I never know when I turn on my machine if I'll be able to see the display or not.
I've replaced the monitor, but the exact same problem has begun to occur with the (brand spankin') new one.
Has anyone ever seen this before or have any ideas about what's going on? Or better yet, any suggestions on how to fix it?

Eric

this is not something you'll likely be able to fix as DIY'r. Take it back in the shop for a backlight voltage regulator. Since this supplies the -5000v or so required by the light.

Replaceing the 'monitor' will not fix this problem, since backlight and LCD are 2 different components.
