First of all we need to know whether you have an AGP or PCI-e slot for the graphics card to go into.

You definitely don't need a 512MB video card. And without your complete system specs, it's difficult to make a recommendation for an AGP card.

What motherboard do you have? What speed RAM? What's the wattage of your PSU & how many amps are on the +12v rail? The AGP slot does not supply adequate power for high end cards, so any performance card you install will HAVE to be connected to the PSU...therefore the PSU must be able to handle the added load, if not, you'll either have to upgrade that too, or go for a weaker video card. Lastly, how much are you willing to spend?

CPUZ is a program that will provide all sorts of info about your CPU, motherboard & RAM.

PSU = Power Supply Unit.

If you don't have an adequate PSU, with at least 350 watts & no less than 18 amps on the +12v line, you're not gonna be able to run a high end video card. Like I explained above:

"The AGP slot does not supply adequate power for high end cards, so any performance card you install will HAVE to be connected to the PSU...therefore the PSU must be able to handle the added load, if not, you'll either have to upgrade that too, or go for a weaker video card."

And if you look at this picture of a typical x1600 Pro, you'll see (upper right corner of the pic) that a floppy type power plug is required:
