Chkdsk errors don't clear

I've done 3 chkdsk in a row on my wife's PC. Each time it finds a bunch of orphaned files and hangs at 12% when verifying file data. It desn't really hang but takes a long time to complete. I start the chkdsk process by going to C:\ properties on Window's Explorer. After clicking Tools and error checking, I check both boxes (Fix file system error & recovery of bad sectors).
Since I keep getting basically the same errors each time I run chkdsk, should I take this to mean there is a hardware issue? Is there another utility I can run to do a more aggressive repair? The PC will boot normally but occasionally fails to wake up after going into standby mode. When this happens, it will automatically run the chkdsk.

Sounds like the drive could be dying. Make sure your data is backed up.

FYI, I finally decided to load XP on this machine after my last 2 loads were with Vista with the same results. I no longer have any issues with disk errors. I have had XP on this machine for just over a week now and just finished running a chkdsk just to be sure. No problems found. I guess the root cause of my disk errors had something to do with Vista. I hope the next version of Windows is more robust.
