A CMOS battery is only needed to maintain power to the CMOS memory chip when a system is completely powered off. And by that I mean, unplugged or switched off at the power/surge strip. A simple reboot should not affect the BIOS settings. A complete shutdown on the other hand, may affect the settings if the battery is dead or too weak. Did you check the battery with a voltmeter?
