Is there anyway to check what program/ process is working with my usb HD?

Recently I cannot remove my usb HD by clicking on the little green arrow. Even when I just turn on my nb and plug it into my nb and then try to remove it right away, I still can't.

I only have two option:

Option1: power off my nb and then remove it;

Option2: pull the plug regardless what might happen to the data inside the usb HD. (I heard that if you do this, your data inside usb HD can be unretrievable)

I'm using Windows XP Pro on Asus A8Sc notebook.

Azen,
Which USB HD is this, Make and Capacity ?
Is it happening since you bought it or it just started happening now?
When you plug it into your laptop, does laptop detect it successfully and you are able to read /write data on it ?

I use a NuSlim case with a Fujitsu 120G 2.5" H.D. and it always works fine until several days ago.

At first, I can hear the beep sound when I plug it into my NB, but I can't see the drive in "My Computer", nor the little green arrow. I just pulled the plug and reconnected it again and it showed up. A few days later, I started having trouble to disconnect it normally.

Nevertheless, I still be able to open/write the files in it.
