so i have this amd 1700 in my room thats just gonna be running nonstop downloading and what not. the thing isnt loud but it isnt quiet enough for my liking. i might stick it under my bed but i dont know how that is gonna work temperature wise. anyone know what the cheapest way is to silence this thing? fanless coolers are way to expensive for this little server project of mine. this thing has 2 fans, the cpu and psu ones. anyone know what i can do to shut this thing up? ill spend up to fifty bux on this.

Asus A7N8X-X
AMD XP 3200+

If it's a steady noise you can get used to it. I keep a fan running at night and I sleep better with it. It muffles most outside noise.

With the processor you have you will not get a silent system for $50. All silent methods cost money - watercooling is expensive & problematic & I haven't come across a fanless thermal system for newer CPUs. Also fanless PSUs are also well over $100. Just covering it up will risk overheating.

Get layers of half inch thick polysteyrene, or cardboard if you cant get any poly, and pack it beside the walls on the case. Just make sure the fans are working well, as the polysteyrene will make the system heat up a little, but will keep it quiet. Make sure the poly isnt touching any heatsinks either, as it could melt. I use this method on my server, and it does the job.

The fans themselves never make a lot of noise... it's the speed of the air that they move.

Over sizing the heat sink as well as the fans. and running them at 1/2 the rpm makes things a lot quieter. The idea is to create a steady breeze instead of a steady blast.

Get a cheap older computer that doesn't put out as much heat as the sun and download away on that. If you have cable modem, a PII-400 works just great.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

google on 'quiet pc fans' and you will get almost 2 million hits. There are quiet fans out there both for the cpu and for the case, and possibly the PSU. The don't cost a fortune. The trick is mostly to slow down the blades, as noted above. They will still move enough air. I have four in my case, now, and they are considerably quieter than the old ones were. Now, that said, they will never be completely silent. But they may even use less power, and that's a plus. By the way, what are you doing, downloading DVD movies? LOL. As robertj says, the actual amount of electricity used is really pretty small. Good luck.

Hi

nice rig , love the tidy cabling btw, i use Tk sb & V12 fans so i know the noise they make ive even reduced the fan speeds as low as poss using the fan controller still some noise
recently i read about this;
http://www.overclockers.com/articles1263/

coupled 1 side with a 120mm case fan apparently is suitable for non intensive cpu loading so while not being the cheapest £35 is certainly quiet.

It's time to remind everyone that johnoh said it best a few years ago.

"of quiet cool or cheap, you can choose any two of the three"

That's still a fact of life...
