I just bought a new laptop battery and a/c adaptor...when i plug in the adaptor, my computer recognizes it but does not charge the battery, the percentage of battery life remaining declines even though its plugged in...also, my computer will not turn on without the battery in, could this be a motherboard problem??????

If the Laptop is still under warranty contact MFG' s Support.
If not the fix is different for different Laptops.
Post the MFG & model# of your Laptop. More than likely the AC plug is separated from it's mounting inside the Laptop.
Some Laptops have this connection directly on the Mothrboard, which requires either Repair or Replacement of the plug. Soldering involved, possibly the Motherboard if un repairable.
Some newer Laptops have a separate, replaceable mini Printed Circuit Board that can be replaced without disturbing the Motherboard.
HP is one brand that uses the Mini PCB. I don't know if it's all models but I have one for a dv6500.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

the laptop is a hp compaq presario c500. The warranty is out on the laptop. The laptop does recognize the a/c adaptor, and says it is charging, but it actually is not charging because the battery
runs completely down.

How can the warranty be out already if you just bought it new?

Is the new a/c adaptor and battery the exact type recommended by HP? If not, be aware that comparable or equivalent type do & can cause problems for the laptop.

There are about 91 different Models in the c500 family of notebooks.

There is an 800 Parts number on this linked page. Let HP answer your question. Could also be a known problem.
