Specs: Windows 7
My daughter was trying to charge her cellphone through the usb port with a spliced wire (I don't know what she was thinking), suddenly the laptop flashes and then goes dead and won't turn on. What has happened?

Agree with XpUser4Real. Probably time for a new laptop (and don't let her charge it that way again)...

But don't stifle her creativity. Every up and coming genius blows up a few things before they get it right.

PS. You can usually find those USB chargers on ebay for $5.

Agree with all above. She might actually learn something by taking apart the old laptop, following directions she can find online and trying to diagnose the problem systematically and then reassembling it. She is unlikely going to be able to fix it, but the experience may be worth the money otherwise wasted by having to replace it anyway at this point and finally, she will be ten times less likely to mess the new one up with some foolish scheme in the future. She will learn to do some research, think the problem through, and learn from other people's mistakes, before jumping ahead to 'solve' her problem.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
