I have a Dell 2400 and I just bought a new case to put the guts into... however, I've heard that the power supply in the new case could fry my mother board. Another person said that wouldn't happen and if the connecters fit, everything will work fine. If someone knows any of this information for sure and has done this.. Please help.

Hi,

You need to be very cautious regarding the power supply as advised. The plugs may be identical, but the pinouts are not always the same.

Check the tech suport pages for your Dell and the new PSU.

You can get convertors to change the pinouts from a standard ATX PSU to fit a Dell motherboard

Unless you are very certain the pin outs are correct do not switch or attempt to switch the machine on. It could be expensive.

You can run into the same problem with Compaqs and possibly other manufacturers.

Sorry, I do not check for private messages

Unless the PS in the Dell is bad, why don't you swap it into the new case?

Or there may be a color code label on the PS indicating the voltages carried by each wire.
