I have jus inhereted the bare guts of a AMD Athlon. It has a ms6191 mobo an a big black processer that slots in. it also came with a modem and graphics card from the same mobo, and a fujitsu 40gb hd. my friend assures me it was working well, before he upgraded to a XP1700. it has the power supply but no case, memory or sound card. could i theoretically give it new life , and more importantly would it out-perform my current pc?

As bad boy questioned, you need to name the processor speed for the Classic Athlon. This processor is most likely a 700/800 MHz, could be as high as 900thunderbird, which worked in the Irongate chipset boards. You would need to have 168 pin SDRAM PC100 memory for this board. If you are interested I have the manual for that MB in PDF format and I could email it to you. I am still running that MB in one of my machines. I use it as an MP3 jukebox connected to an audio receiver.

Sounds like a 900MHz, probably a thunderbird. I personally think that processor can outperform your celeron. The reason AMD stopped making processors in the cartridge package was cost. Your describtion of this processor vague. Is there a heatsink and fan on the cartridge?

Any ATX case with at least 300w PS will do. I don't think the Manual is available on thier site any longer. If you are interested I will email it to you. I also have the latest BIOS file for that board.

I think a 600MHz Athlon would outperform a 700MHz Celeron, but a 900 is easily better. I'm not sure the difference would be noticable, however. You didn't list your RAM, but you would probably gain more performance by adding RAM and doing a clean install of Windows (ideally not ME).

That memory is what you need. If 256MB is OK for what you currently do then it will be enough for the Athlon board.

Celeron and Athlon arent as good as a Pentium 4. And the pentium 4's have hyperthreading. Again not as good as celeron or athlon.
