i'm fixing a laptop for my friend and he brought me an interesting problem. the cdrw/dvd drive is being detected by bios and by windows. its working normally as far as windows knows. no problems in device manager. it wont read disks though. i've tried music cds, dvds, bruning disks and its like theres no cd in there at all. the drive seems to be working cause the light is on and it sounds like its spinning. i've already updated the drivers and windows and still nothing. really i've never seen this problem before ever. really strange. any advice would be appricited. thanks

I just encountered a nearly similiar problem on a normal computer. The bios detected the CD-RW, Windows 98 detected it but as soon as you put any CD into it the computer froze. I was just giving up and as a last idea I just changed the power connector against another free one and everything worked again!

Don't think you'll find too many free power connectors in a laptop.
You could try cleaning the drive with compressed air, but as you said you can't read CDs or DVDs (separate lasers), I don't hold much hope.
