Originally wiped hard drive to clean out my personal data & any bugs. Did a clean re-install of Win XP Home SP2 OEM twice. DIDN'T CHANGE ANY DEFAULT SETTINGS upon re-install, & couldn't get burner(s) to work 100%. I have & I've tried 1 hp & 2 Lite-on DVD CD-RW units. 1 lITE-ON is new/unused. Installed software from maker's boxes. I can burn cd's from my playlists in Windows Media Player, NO PROBLEM. I CAN'T save/burn to cd ANY files, folders, emails, etc. A window opens & says: (D:\ is not accessable. Incorrect function.) The burner was set up as master with the factory cd-rom as slave. The burner is usable as a cd-rom, (still set as master), & I now have a Zip Drive 100 as a slave cuz' I neeed to save stuff somehow. If you rht click on a folder to burn, the window box opens but no cd option to burn to is displayed. If you go to the left of the screen to use the copy or move options, you get that "not accessable" message. I've been using this pc for over a year with no problems & now I've upgraded to another PC & wanted to give this 1 to my grandson. Please...... What's the fix for this?

It sounds like you are trying to use "packet writing software" like the drag and drop in XP. Try a full blown CD/DVD software package. There is a good freeware one called CDBurnerXP Pro. You can download it at: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ Try it and see if it allows you to burn to CD.

I may be totally off target, but here's a guess:
Many Windows OSs don't natively support CD-RW. You usually need to install a package/suite (for example I have Nero) in order to get the OS to recognize the CD-RW; almost like needing a driver to get your hardware to work.
For reference I installed a Sony CRX320 in my PC which came with the Nero software included in-the-box. Good luck.

"Did a clean re-install of Win XP Home SP2 OEM twice"
Why twice? What went wrong the 1st time?
"The burner was set up as master with the factory cd-rom as slave"
I rarely put two optical drives on the same cable. I would make the CD-ROM as the primary slave & the burner as the 2ndary master. And make sure you have a burning program installed (Nero, Roxio, etc)

In addition to the above advice be aware that that third party burner programs don't play well together. If you have installed more than one you may want to remove one and reboot.

OK guys, let me add to my info for my problem. The 2 Lite-on DVD/RW-CD/RW units came with NERO software which I installed. It included the complete Nero Suite option & InCD option. I put both in. Should I have NOT installed both? It doesn't say NOT TO in the op manual. Power DVD software was also installed. I did a clean install of my OS because I thought MAYBE the 1st install was incomplete/bad. I'm gonna wipe ALL the NERO, InCD, & POWER DVD programs out of my PC & install NERO 6 that came with another burner I bought 2 yrs. ago. If that doesn't work I'll go back with the Nero software that came with the Lite-on product & install piece by piece. I'll let you know what works or doesn't.

Update - Update - Update on my problem.
I removed all the InCD & Nero programs from the PC then installed Nero Express from older 2 year old burner. If I use the Nero software I can do what I want. HOWEVER, why in the world all of a sudden am I NOT able to perform a burn of any data files or folders the way I USED TO by clicking on the copy or move file/folder options right on the page like I did prior to my wipeing the hard drive??? If I try that I STILL get the "Can't perform this function" message. What a pain! When I got this PC I had to install a new HD Drv & load everything. What made this PC change into a problem child? My grandson ain't gonna get this headache cuz' I'm gonna rape the contents out & put 'em in a different PC for the kid to use. Thanks anyway for your help. I'm sure I'll visit again soon cuz' I have this old Compaq Deskpro EN 1.0 that just ain't right.......

In order for Nero to burn on a drive it must be able to identify that drive. If your version of Nero allows it, update it at the Nero site. The BIOS on your computer doesn't differentiate between CDrom & DVDburner. They are all optical drives. The software makes the DVDRW work. Many bundled copies of Nero only work with the drive they were bundled with so you may not be able to update the one you have installed.

Just FYI, the built in drag and drop burning software in XP is not UDF packet writing software like Roxio's Direct CD or Nero's in CD. It may act like it but it is totally different.

And under XP there is an option when you go to the drive properties where you tell it to allow burning to this disk.

Today seems like a good day to chew through the restraints.
