My system recognises cd-rw at startup, in devices is says it is working properly but when I put a cd in - open drive - "please insert disk..." Tried using cleaner but doesn't recognise that (it spins). Can rightclick and eject cd. Any ideas why it won't recognise any cds?

I have a 48X cd-rom that does the exact same thing, the only time I got it to work was in dos, you might want to try new ASPI drivers from Adaptec/Roxio, it fixed my drive once before. Or if the CD-RW drive's manufacturer has some at their site I'd try those first.
Good Luck Let me know how it goes :-)

sounds like the media sensor is blocked or bad. you wouldn't be able to clean it without opening it up and doing a inspection.

I have the same problem, but with my DVD ROM, sys "please insert disc"
It reads normal CD's and Audio CD's fine but not DVD's.
Have had this problem for months, I psted here a couple of time but have still not managed to resolve this problem.
Trouble is I don't know the make of the drive.
Any ideas?

Mark E. Payne,
I suggest pulling your Drive out and looking for an FCC # go here:
http://beta.driverguide.com/beta/index.php
(Name:Drivers Pasword:All)
on the left side look under resources and click fccid search enter the FCC # you found and this will tell you the manufacturer then for the model it should also be somewhere on the drive.
Hope that helps
