I have tried to install a new cd-rw, replacing an old one which i thought was broken as one day it just stopped working (cd rom drive not ready). so i thought getting a new one would fix the problem, but it's even worse. when i plug just the power into the new one, it's fine, opens / closes / lights flash etc. but as soon as i plus the ide cable in, it stops working (no lights, no open/close, not recognised by my computer. then if i take the ide cable out, it still doesn't do anything until i unplug the power and then reconnect it. i've got the ide cable running from the cd-rw into the ide secondary on the motherboard, with jump settings as master. i just cannot get any cd rom to work on this pc, does anyone have any idea what the problem might be????
i've tried new ide ables, turning the cables around different ways, obviously tested out the power connection as mentioned above.
when i restart my pc, it does recognise there is a change in the configuration but says that ide hard disk 2 is not installed, then it says atapi devise driver version "something" cd rom drive not ready, then when i press abort, it says to check power and cables.thanks

I would ck to see if both IDE channels are enable in Device Manager and in BIOS. I've seen puter's do some wierd stuff before and this sounds like a probable.
Clyde

Thanks Clyde,
That sounds like a good theory, and might be whats causing the problem.
I think I'll be able to work out how to check this in the BIOS, but I can't work out how to check this under Device Manager. What do I have to look up???Thanks
Dan

Actually, probably need some guidance on how to check the bios too.
also, just noticed that when it states that the cd rom is not ready, it also says "no interface card found".any idea what that means?
thanks
dan

My suspicion is that the Master/Slave plugging is wrong or you have plugged the cable in upside down. Make sure that the new drive is plugged the same as the old one.

Hmm, Windows 98, should be an Item in Device Manager that has a title for that. Been awhile since I've looked at it on Win 98. Also, use your auto detect mode for Primary and Secodary drive finders in BIOS.
Clyde

Thanks Brad,
I'm pretty sure I've got the Master settings right, and also the cable around the right way. Thanks Clyde,
I've looked everywhere in Devise Manager, ad can't find anything that mentions IDE Channels, but would it be the one called Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)? If so, this is the only one showing, and there is no mention of Secondary IDE Controller, should there be?Failing all of this, can I just use one of those IDE cables with three points, and set the cd-rw up as a slave on the primary IDE channel with the Hard Disk as the Master?
Thanks
DanThanks
Dan

That be the one there Matey, make sure your secondary IDE is enable, otherwise, you won't have access to it. I can't remember exactly how to enable it these days, XP has taken the brain over LOL.
Clyde

Is it recognized on the boot screen? or in the BIOS? Usually to get to the BIOS, you hit the DEL key during bootup...watch the screen, it should say something like, "to enter setup, press DEL"
How are your devices configured & how many do you have? Since you have an older machine that may not support independent timing, & assuming you have 3 devices (HDD, CD, & CDRW), they should be setup like this:
primary master = HDD
primary slave = none
secondary master = CDRW
secondary slave = CDMake sure the master/slave jumpers on the back of the drives are set properly...don't use cable select. It's good practice to put the master on the end plug, slave on the middle plug. On the drives, the red stripe on the ribbon cable should be closet to the power plug (red stripe to pin # 1)...on the mobo, look for something near the IDE socket designating the number 1 pin, or look in your manual
