Sony makes excellent equipment. Plextor gets high marks from the experts.

I'm currently using a LiteOn LTR-52327S, 52x32x52 CD-RW, and for the price ($55 bundled with a LiteOn 16x/48x DVD-rom) it is a soild performer. Haven't made a coaster yet! It's a bit on the noisy side when the disc is spinning at 52x speed, but the speed builds up progressively. But having used expensive HP CD-RWs in the past, this one is a keeper.

Just watch for sales (w/rebates) at OfficeMax, Circuit City, BestBuy, CompUSA, etc....you can usually find a 52x24x52 for $10-20 after rebate. There are only a handful of optical drive manufacturers...the rest are "repackagers" of name brand drives. You'll see names like Mad Dog, Khypermedia, Micro Advantage, Cendyne, I/O Magic, Pacific Digital, etc...but inside, you'll usually find Lite-on & others.....

I had a sony and I loved it but since I already had a Samsung DVD-rom I liked how it seemed to be a little more stable with the door so I got a Samsung cdrw and put the sony in my kids computer. The Sony did burn the cd's a little faster then the Samsung does but they both work good and they both came with Nero. Hope this helps a little.

This Sunday, OfficeMax is offering a 52x24x52 CDRW drive for $10 after rebate, along with a LOT of "free after rebate" stuff, including a 100-pk CDRs, 10-pk CDRWs, 50-pk slim cases, to name but a few of the deals...
