CD-RW drive won't stay closed!

I've seen a bunch of threads all over the interwebs, and I haven't found a solution yet. Maybe some helpful young techie here can help me.

I desperately want to burn an iso image to a CD-RW. Not that much to ask, right? Anyway, my computer, a Dell Dimension 8200, has two drives: a CD-RW and a CD/DVD-ROM. First, I thought "Why not, let's put it into the DVD-ROM!" Well, the image burning software obviously didn't even read the drive, brcause a ROM doesn't write. Simple, I know.

So I moved the blank CD (I know it's blank because I pulled it off the fresh stack myself) to the lower of the two drives, the CD-RW drive. Now, before now, the drive was contentedly shut. After I put the CD in it and pressed the close button, the light blinked for about 15 seconds and then slid back open again.

When I pull the CD out again, it closes just fine and dandy. I've tried disabling/enabling the drive, I've tried removing everything from around the drive that I could without taking the thing apart. I tried brute force, but that didn't work.

All I want is an iso image disk. Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

Did you try another CD?

Does this happen with any other CD? say for example a film? put a film or a CD with some data in there and see if it spits it out or reads it.

and then try another BLANK CD and see what that does.

The other CD worked fine. It closed and read. The one with data, that is. The other blank CD did not. I tried a CD of the same brand that was CD+RW instead of CD-RW and it didn't work. Maybe it was the kind of disk? I'm going to go get some new disks tonight, I hope.

I got it to work. It turns out I was using a DVD-RW and a DVD+RW, not CDs. Apparently my drive doesn't like them.
