CD-RW drive will not read

My cd-rw/dvd drive is not reading discs. it is recognized in windows and in the bios. i found a new firmware and upgraded that the drive is a hl-dt-st rw/dvd gcc-4243N

the laser burned out or got off center. replace it

Test the drive from a win98 startup disk. From dos A:\* * is the drive letter Type *:\dir
If it can read it will show content.

beckrl,i tried to test it out with a win98 startup disk. wouldnt read. i think you are right mountain.

To verify if it is the laser try a DVD. The drive uses a different laser for CDs and DVDs. If it reads DVDs then it is almost a sure thing the laser for CDs is dirty or gone. The drive is old. For $30 you can get an DVDRW burner.
