Comment:

Drive reads application disks but when I want to write, after insertion of blank disk, I get a crash and the blue screen telling me to try uninstalling any recently installed software. Since I haven't needed to write for years, that's a lot of software. I tried reinstalling my Roxio Creator 5.1 disk and got a message saying that it was incompatible with this version of windows, but XP is listed on the disk. So I can't understand why it would be incompatible. Besides, I was able to write to disks (both CD-R and CD_RW) when I first got the machine.

Could be a driver issue. You may have to right-click on the drive icon in My Computer, then go Properties - Hardware - Properties, look in the Driver tab, and see if you can update it. Also, if that doesn't work, you may have to go to the drive manufacturer's website and get the driver for that particular model (in case yours got corrupted somehow).
