Reply: (edit)Obviously if "windows xp SCORPIONe-SICO" is a lot different from regular versions of XP, we aren't going to be able to help you much, but here goes... "...i cant figure it out with device manager..." Are you seeing errors there? If so tell us what you see. "...when it detects the hardware(cd and dvd drives) it asks to reinstall and it says ERROR drivers either corrupted or missing, so...eh." What is "it" - the operating system or Windows Media Player (assuming that's what wmp stands for)? The drivers for a dvd or cd burner drive aren't any different than those for a plain cd reader, and are built into the operating system. However, what a lot of people forget to do when they do a from scratch install of an operating system is to forget to load the drivers for the mboard after they have loaded whatever operating system after Setup has finished, so that Windows or whatever operating system has all the proper information about the mboard. If the operating system does not have the proper info about the hard drive controllers on the mboard it often can't set the CD or DVD burner drives to their faster modes, and if they are not in their faster modes, burner software or anything that can detect burner drives will often not see them as burner drives.

Reply: (edit)Okay then. Maybe one or more of your system files is corrupted that supports the CD/DVD drives. Normally if you had a regular version of XP and at least one working CD drive, you could insert the Windows CD in a drive, and Run cmd, and then sfc /scannow (system file checker) to have Windows replace corrupted files, but you don't have a working CD drive. Take a look at Device Manager - DVD/CDRom drives - the name of a drive model - double click on it - Driver tab - Driver Details You should have 4 or 5 lines listed there, with the names of files and where they are are on the hard drive (the Path to the file). It may be one of those files that is corrupted. You need to copy those files off of another computer with XP and a burner drive on it, then copy them to the same locations listed in the list on your computer. On one of my computers that has XP Pro on it (pre SP1), I have 4 driver files listed for a CDRom drive, and 5 for a Sony DVD/CD burner drive - the 4 files in common are exactly the same ones. BsStor.sys, cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, and redbook.sys are all in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers For the Sony DVD/CD burner, storprop.dll is in C:\Windows\System32 All these files are standard Windows XP files, and all of them will fit on a floppy disk. As far as I know they are the same versions in all versions of XP, but I could be wrong. NOTE that when I looked at the file list in C:\Windows\System32 storprop.dll was not in the list in the proper alphabetical place until I clicked on Name at the top of the list. .... If that doesn't help either Check your hard drive(s) - the corruption could be caused by a drive that is starting to fail. Download a diagnostic utility from the maker of the hard drive's web site, and run the diagnostics - usually there are two - a quick and a longer one - run both. If there is nothing wrong with the hard drive itself (errors in the data organization only can be fixed) then you may need to re-install your hacked operating system in order to replace corrupted files. If you had a regular XP version bootable CD, you could do an XP Repair Setup and not lose any settings and software installs you have already done, but if you don't have a bootable CD of your version of XP you can't do that.

Reply: (edit)Your last post is as clear as mud. You shouldn't need to hunt around in Device Manager. When you go to - DVD/CDRom drives - the name of a drive model - double click on it - Driver tab - Driver Details you should see 4 or 5 lines listed there, with the names of files and where they are are on the hard drive (the Path to the file). If that isn't what you see, you could try copying the files I mentioned from another XP computer to your computer to the same locations as in response 9, then uninstalling the ! entries for the drives, rebooting, having XP find the drivers. If that doesn't help, check your hard drive, etc. as in the last part of response 9.

Reply: (edit)According to your picture in response 5 you DO have DVD/CDRom drives - the name of a drive model in Device Manager In DVD/CDRom drives - the name of a drive model you may not be able to see the Properties if you double click on the name of the drive since they have a yellow ! beside them Try this : - on another computer with XP on it BsStor.sys, cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, and redbook.sys are all in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers Copy those 4 files to a floppy disk storprop.dll is in C:\Windows\System32 Copy that file to the same floppy disk. Remove the floppy disk, put it in the floppy drive of your computer. Go to Device Manager - DVD/CDRom drives - the name of a drive model with a ! at the end RIGHT click on the name - select install the drivers - change the location it looks in to the floppy disk instead of wherever else
...... If that doesn't work Copy BsStor.sys, cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, and redbook.sys from the floppy to the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder Copy storprop.dll from the floppy to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. Go to Device Manager - DVD/CDRom drives - the name of a drive model with a ! at the end RIGHT click on the name - select UN-install Do the same for the other name of a drive model with a ! at the end Reboot - Windows may find the drivers automatically, DVD/CDRom drives - the name of a drive model - will no longer have !'s beside them. ... If that doesn't help, check your hard drive, etc. as in the last part of response 9.

Reply: (edit)"....i could not find BsStor.sys....' I took another look. BsStor.sys is a proprietary driver put there by another program - you probably don't need it. "if you look at that pull down box on last tab, stopprop.sys is the class installer ....anything to do with it? " HUH? What tab, where? There is no stopprop.sys on my XP system - there's STORPROP.DLL - note the R and the DLL. The error message in your image in the grey Window is inappropriate - a CD drive with no CD in it has no volume information.

Reply: (edit)I do not have the Details tab on my older version of XP that is on the computer I look at. That is either an XP SP2 feature, or it is a feature of your "xp-hacked" configuration, or of some other modification of a standard Windows installation you have loaded. Nomatter. If you did either or both the procedures as in response 13 starting at "Try this" but with BsStor.sys omitted, and your CD drives are still not seen, I have run out of ideas other than you will have to re-install Windows.

Reply: (edit)No, you're not "getting it" . How specific do I have to be?. All IDE CD and DVD drives use the same drivers in Windows THAT ARE ALREADY IN WINDOWS. Those drivers allow Windows to recognize the CD or DVD drive and make the drives capable of reading CDs or DVDs - providing you have the proper main chipset drivers loaded. If you don't have the proper chipset drivers loaded, Windows may not have the proper info about the hard drive controllers and may not be able to enable the faster CD or DVD drives speeds (and often the faster hard drive speeds) and in that case, usually any CD drive or DVD drive is recognized only as a CDRom drive, but sometimes no CD or DVD drives are recognized at all. The ability to burn CDs or DVDs is determined by other software, which may or may not be built into Windows depending on the version of Windows XP you have and/or the version of Windows Media Player you have. Most CD or DVD burners come with burning software of some sort if there is no such software in Windows, which you can use whether or not there is burning software in Windows. Did you try system file checker? You could try an XP Repair Setup, but I don't know whether it will help since you are using hacked XP. In fact, if you can uninstall the hacked version and restore the regular XP with doing anything else, I recommend you do that, then run the XP Repair Setup. See the latter part of response 8 in this: http://www.computing.net/hardware/w...

Reply: (edit)"thx but i cant do that, the cd rom doesnt function to run xp repair..." Hello! You should be able to boot the XP CD in a CD drive regardless of whether it works in Windows - that's a bios function! The bios Setup is probably already set to boot a bootable CD in a CD drive before a hard drive. Insert the XP CD in a CD drive - the button on the front should eject the tray fine. Reboot the computer. You should get a message along the lines of "Press xxx key to boot from CD" or similar. Press the stated key before the message disappears - the CD should boot and Windows Setup should start to load files. If you don't see that message, let Windows load, then restart, go into the bios Setup, and set the boot order so that a CD drive is before any hard drive - the best boot order is floppy drive first, CD drive second, then the hard drive Windows is on - save bios settings. After the computer reboots, you should see the message, and be able to boot the CD. If that doesn't work, let Windows load, eject the CD from the drive it is in, insert it in the other drive. Restart Windows. After the computer reboots, you should see the message, and be able to boot the CD. If you still don't see the the message, either none of your CD drives are plugged into their power connector, the data cables to them are damaged or disconnected, or your power supply is failing and they are not getting enough voltage, or they got too much voltage and both CD drive controller logic boards are dead. Check your PS. See response 4 in this: http://www.computing.net/windows95/... Make sure the data cable connectors are fully seated. Is is quite conmmon to rip the data cable and break the wires, especially when removing it. Look for broken wires at the edges, often right at a connector or underneath the cable clamp there. If you were fiddling with data cable connections or the jumpers on the CD drives for master/slave/cable select, make certain they are correct.
