cd-rom uses 100% cpu

OS: WinXP SP1
CPU/Ram: 1.5GHz/256MB

When I copy something from cd to hd the cpu jumps to about 100% but the speed of copying stays only at about 2000KBs. My cd-rom drive is Asus S520A 52x. This happens with all cds (but not on my cd-rw drive Asus CD-RW5224A)no matter the position of the drive slave or master. this cd drive used to be very fast. what's happenin'?

Are you sure that both devices have DMA enabled??

Check that in your System Propierties, install your chipset manufacturer drivers.
