Comment:

I am putting together a new system after most of the last one died of old age!

I have the hard drive partitioned and formatted, but I can't get the CDROM to work.

It appears at POST but when I try and start Windows 98 'With CDROM support' it tries to setup the Oak ATAPI driver and comes upwith 'No drive detected'and fails.

All the stuff I can find on the internet on MSCDEX talks about altering autoexec.bat and config.sys, but I don't have them as the hard drive is blank. Any ideas??

Sorted it by borrowing another CDROM from a mate.

This one is recognised by the generic driver, and I can get mine working once windows is installed!!

Which way do you have the cd-rom set up and where do you have it plugged in at? Your hd should be set as the primary drive and plugged into the ide 1 on your mobo. Your cd-rom should be either set to the secondary drive or the primary drive depending on where it is plugged into. If your cd-rom is plugged into the ide 2 on your mobo then you should have it set to primary drive via the jumper on the back of the cd-rom. If it is ran off the cable from your hd then it should be set to the secondary drive. I would check and see how you set them up.

Well, you could just go to www.bootdisk.com, and download a new, working Windows98 boot disk. After you download it, run it and it will creat one for you. Floppys become corrupted easily.
