hi,
ive been recentyl trying to put together my computer and everythign seems fine excpet for the fact that my CDROM (CD-R only) is not being recognized by windows at all. I have one CR-ROM only (well i had a cd-wrtier as well, but i removed it cause it's useless to me now), and i onyl wanna put the CD-ROM. I have set the jumper to master, and plugged the power cable + the cable coming from the mobo. My computer still recoginze it.. ie: it doesnt show in "My Computer" area. Any ideas?
-And i tried automatic hardware detection in control panel, no use...thnx..
Sam

How was that drive connected when the computer came from Dell? That may be the best way to configure it. Be sure the cable is correct and both IDE channels are enabled. If you have already tried to set to auto in the BIOS then try different ones. Last time I was in a Dell BIOS I think there were selections for CD, removeable disk, etc. Try a different one. You are sure the drive works.

The Dell is for my laptop.Im talking about another computer right now. This computer is an Intel Celeron 1,7Ghz, 256MbRAM.
please not that iwt was working before and once i disocnnected it and everything i couldnt detect it anymore.
Im not sure what you mean by IDE channel, how do i make sre they are enabled? any other suggestions?
thnx...Sam

Get into BIOS, usually by pressing DEL as the PC starts from power off.
The first section should report the 4 IDE devices [or none].

I did that a second ago, i saw 4 ide channels. the primary slave is for my maxtor harddisk.
the secondary master is my Liteon CD-RW (since i connected is again)
and my secondary slave is IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM 52x which is my reader.
So it does automatically see both, but i dont see it in my windowsXP.
Any idea?Sam

OK, so far so good.
Now get a w98 boot floppy.
Here if needed:
www.bootdisk.com
boot on the floppy with CDROM support.
I would modify the line in autoexec which has MSCDEX to include the parameter:
/L:R
which will assign letter R to the first CD and letter S to the next one.
This will save you flapping around trying to figure out which drive letters they are.
Put known good CDs in bothe crives and:
dir r:
[enter]
dir s:
[enter]Let us know.

Where's the primary master??
You should change your IDE configuration:
primary master = HDD w/OS
primary slave = CD-ROM
2ndary master = CD-RW
2nndary slave = 2nd HDDAsus A7N8X-X

Ok, ill try the w98boot disk (although i have XP, why am i getting a w98 disk)...
anyways, just to answer [jam]:
My ide channels are as follows:
primary master = Maxtor HDD
primary slave = Not Detected
2ndary master = CD-RW
2nndary slave = CD-Rshould they be changed? if yes, how?
thnx...
([mechanix2go]--> ill get back to you on the disk issue]Sam

Sam,
If those BIOS settings are correct, ie there is no pri slave, then that's good enough.
The reason for getting a w98 boot disk is to see if the CDs work in DOS.
Strictly step by step.
First they have got to show in BIOS.
Next the need to work in DOS.
Then we sort out XP.
Stick with it.

aight..will do...
just a note...
there are alot of win98 boot disk, i got:
Windows 98 OEM at this link :
http://ftp.vin.bg.ac.yu/util/Boot/boot98.exe
....also, when i edit my autoexec.nt, where is it exactly that i should edit?
(if you want me to post my autoexec.nt, plz let me know)
thnxSam

It's best not to pair up 2 optical drives, especially if you burn "on the fly".
Connect the CD-ROM drive to the same cable as the HDD. Depending on how your drives are installed, you may have to physically move the CD-ROM to a lower bay so that the ribbon cable from the HDD will reach.

"also, when i edit my autoexec.nt, where is it exactly that i should edit?"
You don't have to edit anything.
Get your bootdisk from Bootdisk.com:

Hi Sam,
The autoexec needs a line something like this:
MSCDEX.EXE /D:oemcd001 /L:R
This biy:
/D:oemcd001
is arbitrary, but it must match the device name given in config.sys ; and it usually will.
But the autoexec often lacks:
/D:R
without which you can waste a lot of time figuring out where the drives are.
Won't hurt to post 'em.

Uh, here's what happened to the last person that took my advice about changing the IDE configuration:
